Nintendo Switch vs. Nintendo Switch Lite

Nintendo Switch vs. Nintendo Switch Lite

2019 saw the launching of a new version of the standard Switch – the Switch Lite. The latest version promises a long battery life. Also, it is compact and handheld, unlike the Nintendo Switch.

While both systems play switch games, they differ remarkably from price to functionality. Perhaps, the critical difference is in the fundamental use of the specific Switch.

Look, you can use your standard Nintendo Switch in the following forms:

  • Connected to your TV (or any other display) in a supplied dock
  • As a handheld
  • Stand on a tabletop using its display.

On the other hand, you can only your Nintendo Switch Lite as a handheld.

Now, which one fits your needs? Let’s analyze the two.

Which Switch Suits My TV?

The Nintendo Switch is versatile, as it offers multiple ways of playing. On the other hand, the Switch Lite is purely a handheld device. You can hook it on TV, and the Joy-Con controllers are built-in and permanently attached to the Switch.

The standard Switch is the best option if you want to play switch games on a TV.

Similar Features

While there are some striking differences, some aspects remain similar. For instance, similarities occur in the games they run and how you control them – both are handheld.

Note that the Switch Lite is strictly handheld while the Nintendo Switch has some other way of operating it.

Still, the screen resolution (1,280 × 720) is similar but differ in size. Besides, they pack the same processor – Nvidia Tegra processor, which is based on an ARM-derived design.

Nintendo Switch vs. Nintendo Switch Lite: Differences

Design

Nintendo Switch vs. Nintendo Switch Lite

The Nintendo Switch Lite earns is slightly smaller (8.2 x 3.6 x 0.6 inches) compared to standard Switch (9.4 x 4 x 0.6 inches).

It weighs only 9.8 ounces, which makes it 30% lighter than the classic Switch, which weighs 14.1-ounces.

Notice that its buttons permanently attach to the body of the Switch, which in standard Switch, they are detachable Joy-Cons.

Most users appreciate the sleek design. Specifically, the D-Pad is a welcome improvement, while the console’s matte finish doesn’t retain your fingerprints.

The D-Pad (Control Pad+) is a replacement of the four directional buttons on the left Joy-Con. This Control Pad+ on the Switch lite is dependable for basic platformers, but it is a bit too small for harder 2D action games and fighting games that need pinpoint precision.

Price

Nintendo Switch vs. Nintendo Switch Lite

Nintendo Switch retails for $299/£279.99/AU$469, and it comes with plenty of bundle options.

You get the console, two joy-cons, a dock, and the associated cables.

Bundles include popular games like Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, Pokemon Sword and Shield or Super Smash Bros, which are great starters.

On the other hand, the Nintendo Switch Lite comes at a lower price of $199.99/£199.99/AU$329.95 for the console.

Remember, it is a handheld device, so you don’t get the dock or the detachable joy-cons. However, you can get bundles with more games in most shops; but at an extra cost.

Display

Nintendo Switch vs. Nintendo Switch Lite

The Switch Lite’s shrinking size applies to its screen too. It has a 5.5-inch touch screen down from a 6.2-inch touch panel in its predecessor. But both have a resolution of 1280 x 720.

Though the Switch Lite’s display is small, it is comparable to the Switch’s display concerning color and brightness. Thanks to the Lite’s thinner bezels and uniform design, the screen is even a bit more seamless and immersive.

Battery Life

Battery life is essential. The Nintendo Switch Lite offers Between 4.5 and 9 hours while the Nintendo Switch promises Between 3 and 7 hours of gameplay.

Admittedly, the Older Switch console has miserable battery life. Typically, it can last to 2.5 hours at the bottom and 6.5 hours at the top end. So if you buy a second-hand console, be wary of this feature.

But then again, what you play affects battery life. For instance, when you play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on your Switch Lite will last for four hours and 5.5 hours for the standard Nintendo Switch.

Play Modes

The Nintendo Switch’s dock allows for switching between TV mode and handheld mode. Besides, you can detach the Joy-Con controllers, and hold them separately while the Switch is on a tabletop.

You can sys the same for the Switch Lite. The controllers are permanent, making it playable in handheld mode only.

Games

Most games play on both platforms. Therefore, you can enjoy top titles like The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Super Mario Maker 2 on whatever switch you get.

Keep in mind that Switch Lite doesn’t support games that are built for TV or tabletop mode. Since you can pair the Switch Lite with Joy-Cons or Pro Controller, it is possible to play such games.

The Nintendo Switch Lite is suitable for gamers on the go, thanks to being small and lightweight. Besides, it’s also cheaper and has a longer battery life than the regular Nintendo.

However, it has limitations – you can’t play it on TV. Folks who like laying games on TV, better stick with the standard Nintendo Switch.
